I often go a little overboard.

But that happens when you become obsessive about what you do for a living.

You’ve done it also, surely…

Maybe I’m not alone.

One of the best ways to hone your skill is to study it. And I’m flush with learning material that is yet to be tapped.

I’ve got enough right now, bought and paid for, that if I spend two hours five days a week – I’ll have at least two years of education.

So, I’ve been obsessive about signing up for course creators lists.

Why?

Well, if they’re going to try selling me a course on copywriting, you would assume they would write top-notch copy. And if it’s continually good copywriting, they might have a good course.

This is a cheap way to study copy folks (hint, hint).

There are some skilled wordsmiths out there.

So, of course, some of the copy is excellent.

Others, not so much.

Needless to say – I read and study a ton of marketing emails – I might be reading and studying yours.

Here’s one from my deluge of inbound.

Read the copy below… and see if you can spot a bit of deception or misdirection… their copy follows –

Achieving success as a freelance writer can be narrowed down to these elements:
1. Having the skills in demand in today’s market.
2. Finding clients who will pay you professional fees.
AND/OR …
3. Using your skills to build a clientless writing business.
We can help with all of those today!
The first is the easiest to accomplish …

End copy.

Did you spot it?

Gaining skills is the EASIEST of the three.

Holy-Moly folks.

Your skills are the one thing you need and will always need for success as a writer. And they are telling you that’s the easiest.

Sometimes, I weep for humanity.

Click on a job for a copywriter and see how many applicants they have.
Hundreds within a few hours.

YOUR SKILLS ARE the ONLY thing that separates the good from the bad and ugly.

So, if you try to make your living as a writer of any type – you’d better be able to produce.

It’s this type of deceptive copy that I abhor.

Yet, I understand why it works…

Do you?

Have a great day, everyone.

Ditch the types and just type.

I recently saw a post about the different “types” of copy. And how you must tailor your copy for different media. While this is true
